A genetic defect is the most common cause of color blindness. The defective gene is carried on the X chromosome which is why it most commonly effects males. Another cause is the aging process. this is where the lens in the eye darkens, making it harder to see colors. Some other causes are retinal and optic nerve diseases, and some medications.
