Color blindness can occur if the color sensitive receptors in your eyes have reduced amounts or pigments or if one of the receptor systems are absent. The receptors decode color taken in by the eye so if one of those things happen it would result in color blindness. Color blindness is most often passed on by the mother because it is located on the X chromosome.
